Best Tricount Alternative for Shared Expenses
Last updated: July 12, 2026
Before we built Splital, we used and considered Tricount. It's a free app, with no ads, and it covers the basics of splitting expenses. But a few things we needed almost every day just weren't there: Recurring Expenses for our rent and subscriptions, Custom Default Split we could save once and reuse, and a way to turn off Simplify Debts when we wanted to see who actually owed whom when traveling with friends. So we ended up building Splital.
Today Splital has more than 150,000 users and a 4.8/5 average rating from 2,000+ reviews across the App Store and Google Play.
At a glance
Splital is a Tricount alternative for people who want more: Recurring Expenses, reusable Custom Default Split, automatic categorization, PDF and CSV export, deeper charts, and the option to turn off Simplify Debts. Tricount is a great pick if you want a basic app with no paid tier.

Why people look for a Tricount alternative
Tricount is free, has no ads, and handles the basics of splitting expenses well. People look for alternatives when they outgrow the basics and want something Tricount doesn't offer:
- Recurring Expenses that get added automatically, instead of logging the same rent or subscription by hand every month
- A Default Split they can save and reuse, instead of setting the same custom split manually on every expense
- Smarter, automatic categorization, instead of picking a category by hand
- A way to export their data to PDF or CSV for their own records
- The option to turn off Simplify Debts, so they can see the real, direct balances between people
If any of these is how you actually want to split expenses, that's usually the moment Tricount starts to feel limiting.
What makes Splital different
Splital is completely self-funded. We have no investors, so we answer only to the people who use the app, and we focus on one thing: splitting shared expenses as well as it can be done. That focus is where features like Recurring Expenses and a reusable Custom Default Split come from.
Tricount, by contrast, is owned by bunq, a Dutch neobank that acquired it in 2022. It's a good app, and being bank-owned isn't bad in itself. We just build differently: Splital is an independent app made by two people, Maria and Maurizio, whose whole job is making expense splitting better, not fitting into a wider banking product.

Why Splital is a great Tricount alternative
In this section we'll expand on the features we think you'll notice most when you use Splital instead of Tricount.
Recurring Expenses
Rent, a shared streaming plan, a monthly cleaner: some expenses come back every single month, and logging them by hand is easy to forget. Splital adds them for you automatically with Recurring Expenses. You set the amount, the split, and the schedule once, and each new instance appears on time.

Splital adds recurring expenses automatically on the schedule you set
Tricount has no Recurring Expenses, so every repeating charge is a manual entry you have to remember. Recurring Expenses is free in Splital.
Custom Default Split
If you and your partner always split 60%/40%, you shouldn't have to set that up on every expense. In Splital, you save a Custom Default Split once and it applies automatically to new expenses in the group.
Tricount requires you to manually set it every time: there's no way to save it and have it reused, so it's easy to forget and split an expense the wrong way. Custom Default Split is free in Splital.
Notes on every expense
Splital lets you add a note to any expense, so "Dinner" becomes "Dinner, Marco covered the tip and we'll settle up later." Tricount doesn't let you add notes to expenses, so you need to remember the additional details or write them in a separate chat. Notes are free in Splital.
Better automatic categorization
One of the best reasons to track expenses is understanding where your money goes, and that only works when every expense lands in the right category on its own.
Splital reads the expense description, like "Carrefour" or "Whole Foods", and files it under the right category automatically. From our tests involving thousands of expenses in different languages, Splital automatically sorts around 90% of expenses into a meaningful category.

Splital organizes your expenses into categories automatically

In Tricount, categorization is manual: you pick the category yourself. Over a long trip or months of shared bills, that's tedious work you'll likely forget.
Export your data as PDF or CSV
Sometimes you need your expenses outside the app for your custom spreadsheet, or just your own records. Splital exports any group to PDF and CSV in a couple of taps.
Tricount has no export, so there's no built-in way to get your numbers out of the app.
Turn off Simplify Debts
Simplify Debts is handy when a group has lots of crisscrossing IOUs, but sometimes you want to see the real, direct balances instead of a simplified version. Splital lets you turn Simplify Debts off whenever you like. Tricount instead keeps Simplify Debts always on.
If you prefer seeing exactly who owes whom, Splital gives you that control.
Where Tricount is better
Tricount has some advantages when compared to Splital. If any of these is central to how you split expenses, Tricount is the better pick for you.
Free receipt attachments
Tricount lets you attach receipt photos to expenses for free. In Splital, image attachments are part of Splital Pro. If you want to take photos of receipts and track them at no cost, Tricount is better here.
Basic free stats
Tricount offers much more basic charts and stats when compared to Splital, but they are free and available to all users.
Who should use which?
Both apps split expenses well, and this really comes down to how much you want your expense app to do, and which features matter most to you.
